West Alabama Icehouse
Established in 1928!
Back in the day.
We’ve been a part of Houston since the early days.
The West Alabama Ice House opened in the heart of the Montrose area of Houston, Texas in 1928. It began as a rural neighborhood grocery selling blocks of ice, fruit, and vegetables, but as the business changed hands over the years, the WAIH grew most popular for its large metal boxes of iced beer. When Jerry Markantonis and his family took over the WAIH in 1986, the WAIH became exclusively a beer joint and home to bikers, country folk, and city dwellers of all ages. Today, Jerry's son Pete Markantonis owns and operates the bar, carrying on the traditions his father started and dedicating himself to to the community surrounding the WAIH.
While the WAIH remains one of the last genuine Texas icehouses, the original building as been expanded over the years to accommodate crowds of hundreds. The bar is equipped with a stage, misting fans, horse shoe pit, basketball goal, pool table, chiminea, and plenty of picnic tables.
Most importantly, the WAIH also boasts the most diverse crowd of any watering hole in town. We invite families and friends of
all kinds to gather for good times, cold beer, and a little old Texas charm.
